2 Tips For Making Moving With Your Dog Easier

When you have a pet and are moving, it can be very stressful on you and your pet. Your dog can't really understand what is going on, so he or she could really start acting out simply due to stress. There are things that you can do to make it easier on both of you.

Safe Room

When you are packing everything up, your dog may try to unpack your boxes. If you have a moving company come in to pack everything, all the strangers in your dog's territory touching things that belong in that territory could cause your dog to jump up and down and bark. One way to avoid that problem is to establish a safe room for your dog to go to while everything is going on. Put food and water dishes in there, as well as their bed or a favorite blanket. You may also want to put some toys in there for your dog to play with. Don't wait until the day that everything is happening to get that set up for your dog. Do it a few days ahead of time so that you can spend some time in there with your dog so they are calm while they are in there.

Medication

Even if your dog likes to ride in a car, traveling long distances is something quite different, especially if you choose to travel with your dog in a pet carrier. You can visit your vet to see if there is some medication they can prescribe to help them with the stress of long hours in the car, as well as any travel sickness your pet may have. If you are flying, you will definitely want to talk to your vet about something to help with the stress. Even the mildest tempered pet can be very upset when they are in a carrier for hours and handled by a lot of strangers. You don't have to sedate your pet so that they are completely asleep, but giving them an anti-anxiety medication can make the whole process much easier on everyone.

Since your pet can't understand what is going on, moving is a very stressful process for them. All your dog sees is that everything in their house is going away. Doing all kinds of things that can reassure your pet and lessen their stress can make your move easier for you and much easier on your dog.
