How To Pack A Flat Screen Television When Moving

Packing valuables is always tricky when undergoing a move. While many moving companies offer help with the packing, you might feel more secure knowing for sure how the item was packed and protected. Large items like flat screen televisions can prove particularly problematic for packing if you didn't save the original box and padding. Here's how to get your flat screen television ready before the movers even knock on the door -- and how to make sure it makes it safely to your final destination.

Things You Will Need

  • Moving blankets
  • Packing tape
  • Movers

Step 1: Pad the Television

Keep your television upright during the packing process to avoid damaging the internal components. Purchase moving blankets from your movers. Ensure that you buy enough blankets to fully cover the front of your television with at least one layer.

Begin at the top left corner of the television. Position a corner of the moving blanket so that its edge is not on the screen but rather wrapped onto the back of the television. Use a generous amount of packing tape to attach the blanket to the rear of the television, ensuring that no tape touches the screen. Stretch the blanket down so that the corner vertically parallel to the taped corner is now positioned behind the television. Tape that in place and repeat with the remaining corners.

Tug gently all around the blankets to see if there are any spots where the blanket might come loose. Place additional tape on those areas. If you want to be thorough, add an additional layer of blankets to the front of the television.

Step 2: Oversee Packing the Television into the Truck

When the movers arrive, ask to oversee the loading of the television and the items loaded afterwards. Make sure the television is placed in a corner with the screen facing the wall of the truck to prevent nearby items from smacking into the screen and causing damage. Give the movers any blankets, bean bag chairs or other soft items that can be packed directly around the television for additional cushioning. Watch that no heavy furniture or sharp objects are placed near the television.

If you're overly nervous about trying to move your television, talk with the movers beforehand to learn the process they use for moving. A good mover will be as concerned about the television's safety as you are because damaged goods lead to negative customer reviews, which can sink a moving business over time. In the future, keep the original boxes and packaging material for any new electronics you purchase to make the moving process easier.
